Q. How do I maximize bandwidth speed with my iPhantom™?

To maximize the bandwidth speed with your iPhantom™, the "MTU" (maximum transmission unit) setting on your computer should be set to 1300. The method for adjusting this setting varies depending on the operating system that is installed on your computer and/or networking equipment (routers etc.) that you are using. For Windows® PCs, there is a simple (currently free) program available called "TCP Optimizer" available at http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php (no affiliation to Phantom Technologies LLC). Through this application you can adjust your MTU. Follow the steps below:

1. Download and run the program.

2. Under the "General Settings" tab, select "Optimal Settings" towards the bottom of the window.

3. Change the MTU value (default is 1500) to 1300 and click "Ok".

4. Reboot your computer.

5. Continue this procedure with all of the computers that use the iPhantom™.

Q. I connect to my office network through a VPN. I'm having trouble connecting with it using the iPhantom™. How do I fix this?

Q. I have a DSL Internet connection and am having problems using the iPhantom™. What do I do?

The iPhantom™ is compatible with DSL broadband. Many DSL providers use the PPPoE protocol. The current version of the iPhantom™ does not support PPPoE directly, so you will need to enable PPPoE inside of your DSL modem for the iPhantom™ to function properly. Most modern DSL modems have PPPoE abilities built-in. If PPPoE is not by default enabled in your modem, you will need to manually enable it. Follow the directions provided with your DSL modem to complete this process.

Q. Why doesn't the iPhantom Gateway Antivirus detect and block the EICAR test signatures?

There are several EICAR test signatures available at www.eicar.org. These files are used to demonstrate functionality in antivirus products. The iPhantom Gateway Antivirus engine purposely does not block these signatures because they are used by many desktop antivirus products in their definition update process, and blocking them can cause these products not to function properly.

Q. I am behind a firewall that already that blocks outgoing web traffic on certain ports. Will the iPhantom™ still work?

Some firewall appliances may block UDP traffic and/or certain ports. The iPhantom™ uses the UDP protocol to communicate with the Phantom Gateways. Please see your system administrator or firewall appliance manual for instructions on port forwarding or unblocking UDP traffic and/or ports.

Note: If you need to change the Incoming/Outgoing UDP ports that the iPhantom uses, please refer to the iPhantom™ Configuration manual here.

Q. How do I configure the iPhantom™ to work with online gaming, VoIP, and web hosting services (web server, ftp server, etc.)?
The iPhantom™ has port forwarding features available in firmware versions 1.0.0.80 and above. You may need to open up specific ports on the iPhantom™ for these services to function properly. Port forwarding allows traffic on specific ports to bypass the Phantom Gateways and be sent directly through to the Internet. This is useful for many applications such as online gaming and VoIP which do not require a secure connection to the Phantom Gateways. This feature is also useful for allowing web-based hosting services such as web servers and ftp servers while still having the protection of the iPhantom™ for all other Internet traffic. Please see the online manual on how to enable port forwarding features.
